Transforming Aspects

There are no times when two planets are not related in some way. They are all in the solar system together; they are all part of the whole planetary pattern. Two planets are therefore always in some phase of cyclic relationship with one another. They become in particularly significant relationship when their angular distance from one another measures to certain values. They then form ~aspects~ which refer to definite steps and/or turning point in the process. (Laeyla Rael and Dane Rudhyar - Astrological Aspects)

Astrological aspects are the angles between two planets (or other important points) in the circle of the zodiac. They show the different ways in which energies relate, or "look at each other".

Astrology has harmonious and dissonant aspects like the harmonious and dissonant note combinations in music. It is easier to work with harmonious aspects. But beautiful, meaningful music can be based on disonant chords. Likewise you can create a meaningful and beautiful life whatever the chord you have to work with. This is done by tuning into the higher harmonics - what we call the purer manifestations - of the aspects.

A. Conjunction 360 ° or 0°
The 360° circle divided by 1 gives us 360° or 0°, two points that are together in the zodiac

An emphasised unit, two energies that reinforce each other and excpress themselves through focussed, dynamic action. ending (fulfilment) of one cycle and beginning of a new one. Union.

B. 2-Series : HARD OR CHALLENGING ASPECTS

Opposition 180° (360° divided by 2)
Two points opposite each other in the zodiac form an opposition.

They relate as a polarity, balancing each other and interacting directly.

Polarity, balance, interaction between opposites; dark-light, yin-yang, inner-outer, Midpoint in a cycle, culmination, end of waxing (increasing) phase and beginning of waning (decreasing) phase.

Cycle Phase. Balance points of the relationship between two energies. A turning point midway in either the waxing or waning phase. Reorientation.

Sesquiquadrate 135° (360° divided by 8 and multiplied by 3)

The semisquare and the sesquiquadrate function much like the Square.

These aspects were considered by ancient astrologers to be fortunate or good because they represent harmonious functions between energies. But these benefic aspects lack the dynamic motivating potential of the so called malefic (hard) aspects. In other words each aspect series has bad and good potentials - it's all in how you use them!

G. UNASPECTS

As we have seen, aspects are the harmonics of the circle. The aspects that function most strongly are those which divide the 360° by smaller numbers:1,2,3,4. In addition, aspects formed by dividing the circle by 5,6,7,12 can also be important when they are close to exact. The harmonics of all these divisions of the circle such as 5/12, 3/7 etc) can have significance.

If the aspects were translated into musical tones we could easily hear the harmonic relationship of the strongest aspects. those that are less strong connect more in their overtones than directly. theoretically, any two points on the circle have a specific quality to their relationship, even if it is only in the higher overtones. What we are calling unaspects are the relation ships between two points whose distance is not a simple fraction of the circle.
